The Tar Heels arguably had the best player in the country in Tyler Hansbrough. They had the best point guard in Ty Lawson and the best defensive player in Marcus Ginyard. In short, there were just no weaknesses. Plus, many players were driven to return to the program after losing to Kansas in the 2008 Final Four.

They were in the top 12 in the national rankings – North Carolina was No. 1, while Michigan State was No. 12 – each team was picked to win its respective conferences and each was thought to be on the short list of national champion contenders. However, the game proved to be no contest as the Tar Heels hammered the Spartans, 98-63.

However, the tough-minded Big 10 regular season champion Spartans embodied their coach Tom Izzo and reached their fifth Final Four in 11 years -- the most of any program during that time -- because they were determined to play a deliberate and patient style of game. Louisville's attempt to play an uptempo style proved fruitless because point guard Kalin Lucas broke it time and time again.
http://www.collegesports-fans.com/articles/2009-ncaa-sweet-16-south.html

It may be appropriate that the South regional is in a building that is named for a company – FedEx – where deliveries are the objective.

There should be a lot of those when the South regional starts Friday in Memphis. All four teams in North Carolina, Gonzaga, Oklahoma and Syracuse have been delivering a lot of wins and points for their fans. The teams have combined for nearly 30 wins apiece and have great players to lead them.

Oklahoma has the likely national player of the year in Blake Griffin. North Carolina has the ACC’s all-time leading scorer in Tyler Hansbrough. Syracuse has arguably the most conditioned player in the country in Jonny Flynn. Gonzaga has one of the most underrated players in the country in Josh Heytvelt.

Put that all together and fans should have some fun this weekend watching four very athletic teams fight to get to Detroit.

http://www.collegesports-fans.com/articles/2009-ncaa-sweet-16-midwest.html

The Midwest Regional could arguably be the best of the four regionals, even though it has the lowest seed of the tournament playing in it.

Arizona has shown great resolve in a season that dealt with so much off-the-court adversity that started with the abrupt retirement of Lute Olson. The Wildcats are playing their best basketball of the year. Big East champion Louisville has responded to the expectations of being the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed despite being challenged in the first and second rounds. We still haven’t seen the best of Louisville big man Earl Clark.

Big Ten Champions Michigan State is in the Sweet 16 for the 12th time under coach Tom Izzo. You can’t argue with that kind of consistency. And credit Kansas coach Bill Self with a great coaching job because he had to replace all five starters from last year’s team. The program has won eight consecutive tournament games.

http://www.collegesports-fans.com/articles/2009-ncaa-sweet-16-east.html

For Big East conference fans, the East Regional in Boston is the perfect storm. As this conference showed throughout the season it is the best in college basketball. Now, it is two wins away from having an all-Big East regional championship game.

Pittsburgh and Villanova enjoyed great regular seasons and their resolve was shown in the first two rounds. Pittsburgh earned the region’s No. 1 seed. Villanova earned a No. 3. But they are playing against two of the better programs in the country in No. 4 Xavier and No. 2 Duke.

The Musketeers were an Elite 8 team last year. The Blue Devils are actually back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2006. But the three-time NCAA champions have a better looking team because they are just a little more balanced.

Here’s another one. The Huskies won the 1999 and 2004 national championships coming out of the West Regional. Well, here they are again in Arizona trying to get through with one of the better squads Calhoun has fielded.

But this is far from a coronation. Missouri and Memphis are each 30-plus win teams and Purdue won 27 games. It appears the Huskies have adjusted to life without their second leading scorer Jerome Dyson.
