Hard as it is to attain perfect control, we do have free will and with the help of the Spirit can and must learn to sanctify our thoughts for Jesus Christ.

It is pointed out among other things that the entire way in which God has designed life and the universe demonstrates that there are consequences for our actions, and it would be contrary to the principle of natural revelation were that not to be the case in regard to our need to accept Jesus for salvation.
http://ichthys.com/e-mails.htm

The newly prevalent heresy of universalism,or, "all are saved [no matter what]" is addressed and refuted from several different points of view. The justice of God demands accountability and we are given free will, made in the image of God, precisely so that we may have the ability to respond to Him -- or not. Universalism robs Christians of their motivation (whereas reward motivation is legitimate), and emboldens unbelievers to persevere in their hardness under the false assumption in both cases that "it doesn't make any difference".
